When you use your credit card to buy something
in a store, the clerk swipes your card through a machine and asks you to sign for the purchase.
This is your promise to pay the bill later, when it is mailed to your home. You walk away with what you
might, while your credit card company pays the store within a few days of the transaction. The credit
Card company has loaned you the money for the purchase you just made. You can also give out your card
number over the phone to buy something from a catalog, or you can punch it into your computer to buy
something via the Internet. These purchases don't
require a signature.
